Pros and cons of Scurvy Scallywags app for iPhone and iPad
Scurvy Scallywags app good for
Good game, but I wish it didnt abuse push notifications. It notifies you for no reason whatsoever just to remind you the game exists...
Awesomely addictive, thanks Mr Gilbert for making us so good games, you made my day! Adventure/RPG mechanics in a puzzle game just rocks ! I even see a three headed Monkey in a map ;)
Well I like match3 games. When I sow this one on AppZapp, I didnt understand why Scurvy was somehow different from other games nor how to play it (other than by matching 3!). So as it was priced just 0.89€ I bought it...Ok, Im still not really able to explain someone how to play Scurvy (in English at least), but I can say I love this game a whole lot and I have spent several hours this week end by playing it not stop. It is very easy to understand the gameplay once you start playing, the characters are cute and.....tatachan! I had never seen this way of playing a match3... So well, if you like match3 and having fun, no mistake, you can buy it. This game was a very nice surprise to me.
Simple but addictive game. Adding a player character to a standard match-3 game is a good idea.
First off, this game has pirates, and everyone loves pirates, right? Scurvy Scallywags has a very refreshing take on the match 3 genre, mixing in some RPG elements and most importantly, depending on how you swipe, the pieces on the board will shift in different directions. A definite change of pace when compared to typical match 3 games. Finally, theres lots of humor to be found (unsurprisingly, as Ron Gilbert had a hand in it and any video game fan will tell you he created the Monkey Island series and the Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle games). Finding verses of the ultimate shanty are particularly rewarding.
The only downside? The music gets a bit repetitive after a while. Or maybe Ive just been playing it too much.
Anyhow, a definite thumbs up!!!
Another masterpiece by Ron Gilbert! No one but the evil genius behind Monkey Island could turn a "match-3" game into such an immersive and fun adventure. Arrrr!!
Some bad moments
Game is all about matching three or more swords to increase your attack rating high enough to win when matching against enemies. Theres other junk on the board, but its virtually worthless (unlike games like Puzzle Quest where every resource MATTERS). Damage is very difficult to heal and easily leads to permadeath (which you can avoid by paying real dollars). Youre encouraged to customize your avatar but then have to swap to new ugly clothes (in a bad inventory interface) for marginal stat bonuses. Special powers that break up the sword-matching monotony require literally more than a hundred matches to recharge (so as to not detract excessively from the monotony, presumably).
It has an Game stoping bug for me. Everytime i want to Play for a Shanty Verse the game crashes on my iPhone 5s. Without this bug i would give 5 Stars.
Before I got too far I read the reviews first and now refuse to play. Never again will I be suckered into another disappointing, frustrating, money-grabbing game. I get enough aggravation in real life.
Shame on you Ron Gilbert! I would much rather have paid $10 for the full and complete game than get swindled by bad balancing and greedy IAPs. I paid $3 for 130,000 gold to see how far I could get. Yes, I managed to finish the game but just barely and instead of enjoying the game, I was focused on getting it done as fast as possible with little island exploration and an over-reliance on the bomb skill. I will never play it again unlike other well-balanced match-3 games.
The gameplay is addictive, and there is actual skill to it. Lots of fun!
I missed the talk-like-a-pirate-day special, but went ahead and bought this anyway. Not at all disappointed! I was expecting a different type of match 3 puzzler and was happy to find this games unique take on the formula. And the music is freakin awesome!
